Reading by George Szirtes

On 1 March George Szirtes came to read and to talk about a selection of
his poems. It was a most interesting selection, stretching from his early
appearance in ‘Poetry Introduction 4’ (1978) through to some poems from a
collection ‘The Bad Machine’ planned for publication next year. He put
each poem into context, and talked about the transformation to his life
and work in the 1980’s arising from his renewed contact with Hungary,
which he had left as a refugee in 1956.

George Szirtes is a dynamic figure with an international reputation and he
has an international sphere of activity. To keep up with what he is doing,
